Youbou
Located on the north shore of Cowichan Lake, 13 km west of the Town of Lake Cowichan,Youbou is a former mill town built along a narrow strip of land between the lake and mountainside. Youbou is known for being a rustic, artistic and passionate community with locals who believe in protecting the natural surrounding environment.
The area has many cottages and small houses with lake access or lake views and is home to a majestic elk population.
Why Youbou is Loved
Engaging History: Youbou was originally called Cottonwood, but the name was changed in 1914 byThe Empire Lumber Company. The remains of their sawmill, including wharf remnants, wood pilings, and cement structures are still visible on the edge of the lake and now mostly inhabited by the local elk.
Outdoor Activities: Arbutus Park is one of the nicest public beaches in the area providing many recreational activities and community events.
Youbou Community Bowling Alley: This historic, beautifully maintained four-lane bowling alley, built in 1951, is the only sanctioned bowling alley in the country that still has human pinsetters.
