Vancouver Island Wildlife Guide: Explore Orca Whales, Bald Eagles, and More!

by Maegan Morton

Vancouver Island, with its diverse landscapes and rich biodiversity, offers a captivating array of wildlife encounters for residents and visitors alike. From majestic marine mammals to elusive forest dwellers, the island's natural habitats provide homes to a wide variety of fascinating creatures. Join us on a journey to explore some of the common wildlife that graces Vancouver Island:

  1. Orca Whales:

The waters surrounding Vancouver Island are home to one of nature's most magnificent creatures—the orca whale. Embark on a whale-watching adventure from Victoria, Tofino, or Telegraph Cove, and witness these majestic marine mammals in their natural habitat. Watch in awe as they breach, spy-hop, and playfully frolic in the ocean waves.

  1. Bald Eagles:

With their impressive wingspans and keen eyesight, bald eagles are a common sight along the coastlines and rivers of Vancouver Island. Keep your gaze skyward as you explore the island's natural beauty, and you may be rewarded with the sight of these majestic birds soaring gracefully overhead or perched majestically in the treetops. Driving down south Jinglepot Road, a bald eagle swooped right in front of my car once! The Wildlife Recovery Centre is likely the next closest encounter one would receive.

  1. Roosevelt Elk:

In the dense forests and open meadows of Vancouver Island, you'll find the majestic Roosevelt elk, the largest of the four subspecies of elk in North America. Keep a keen eye out while exploring the island's backcountry, and you may be fortunate enough to spot these magnificent creatures grazing peacefully amidst the towering trees. A herd of Elk have been frequenting my grandparent’s neighbourhood of Cassidy (just outside of South Nanaimo) for as long as I can remember. Here's a photo my Grandma took years ago for reference!

  1. Harbour Seals:

Venture to Vancouver Island's rocky shorelines or take to the water on a kayak tour, and you're likely to encounter playful harbour seals basking in the sun or bobbing in the waves. These adorable marine mammals are a delight to observe, and their curious nature may lead them to approach your vessel for a closer look.

  1. Great Blue Herons:

Along the rivers, estuaries, and coastal marshes of Vancouver Island, the elegant great blue heron can often be spotted wading through the shallow waters in search of prey. With their stealthy hunting techniques and graceful movements, these majestic birds are a sight to behold as they patiently stalk their next meal.

  1. Black Bears:

Roaming through forests, meadows, and even suburban neighborhoods, the black bear is a quintessential resident of Vancouver Island. While encounters with these magnificent creatures are relatively common, it's important to exercise caution and respect their natural habitat from a safe distance.

  1. Sea Lions:

One of the most thrilling wildlife encounters on Vancouver Island is watching the playful antics of sea lions. I was fortunate enough to witness a spectacle of nature at Piper's Lagoon back in February when a group of sea lions gathered to feed. Their boisterous barks and graceful dives provided a memorable experience for all who were present.

  1. White Racoons:

Newcastle Island, just off the coast of Nanaimo, is home to a unique population of white racoons. These rare and elusive creatures, with their distinctive coloration, add to the island's allure and provide an exciting opportunity for wildlife enthusiasts to catch a glimpse of something truly special. I have only been lucky enough to spot them once or twice in my lifetime.
